As a part of the ASCA National Model, School counselors are heavily involved in the college and career readiness aspect of our students. Some would say that this component really only applies to students in middle school and high school, but what about our K-5 kiddos? They need the foundation so that when they enter middle school, they are aware of what kinds of opportunities await them and even more importantly, what their interests are. This conversation starts in the classroom for the younger students as their teachers and school counselors help them explore, learn about, and understand what is out there. As a fairly new school counselor, I have run into some issues in terms of what kinds of classroom activities will meet the needs of these students when it comes to college and career readiness. In my Kindergarten classrooms, we read a wonderful story entitled Frederick, by Leo Lionni which helps open the conversation about different jobs and how everyone's job is important. This discussion usually involves the kids talking about what Mom and/or Dad do for work. Some classes have days where their parents are invited to speak in front of the class about what they do for a living. Sort of a, "Bring your mom or dad to school day" or a "Career" day. What are other schools doing? Til next time, adios amigos! Update: - 2/8 - Just to clarify, this blog is more about hearing what other school counselors and/or schools are doing in the K-5 grades to help build a college and career readiness atmosphere for their students. I am looking to expand upon what I am currently doing in this facet. Parents and other readers are welcome to share their ideas as well! |
